It Doesn't Have to Make Sense to Be Perfect
I am not sure how it happened or why, but last week I was invited to be part of a collaboration – a video series – with Vanity Fair and Patrón Tequila. They were in search of an artist whose work and life encapsulated their tag line: "it doesn't have to make sense to be perfect."
They quickly realized I did not make sense when they met me, but somehow they thought I was perfect for it! They followed me with a camera crew for a full day, came to my office, met my jewelers, my family. We ended the day with an appearance (because celebrities make “appearances”) at a very trendy Patrón party downtown where I introduced my own signature drink – the Fafaquila.
I had so much fun pretending to be a reality star for a day.
I will continue to share updates with you on how this collaboration evolves, but in the meantime, I thought I would share the recipe for the Fafaquila, which was a huge hit at the party.
‘Faloodeh Seeb’ is something that Persian Jews drink after finishing twenty-five hours of fasting for Yom Kippur. Made of shredded apples, infused with rose water and brown sugar, Faloodeh Seeb quenches your hunger and your thirst at the same time in the most deliciously refreshing way. This past Yom Kippur, we broke the fast at my house, and as you can imagine, hosting 30 starving people is no simple task. I needed a drink. So I laced my glass of Faloodeh Seeb with Patrón Silver and a little freshly squeezed lime. This tasty yet quite potent drink made the night go much more smoothly.
Little did I know I would be introducing this to a room full of tequila connoisseurs 2 weeks later!
I was invited behind the bar and asked to create a “mixology” based on my recipe. A sweet and tangy cocktail, the Fafaquila (that's what I named it, my mom’s nickname is Fafa) is light and flowery. The rose water gives it a subtle elegance, and the floating grated apples a unique savory and crunchy dimension. The combination did not make sense but it was divine!
So here’s the recipe. Please try it and let me know what you think. I will share the video soon too...if they do decide to release it!
1/3 cup of fresh apple shreds
½ cup of rose water
3 tbsp of brown sugar
1 shot of Patrón Silver (or 2)
